What you thought Gmail wouldn’t do but does

Using Fonts and Signatures that aren't in Gmail and embedding photos




Would you like to use a font that doesn’t exist in Gmail?
Use a different language including the font?
Would being able to add more than one signature for different occasions?
How about embedding photo’s or images into emails.

If some of the text sizes in this are too small to read use Ctrl+the mouse scroll wheel to enlarge it.
This is a work in progress so please come back as often as possible as it will be updated whenever possible.

New is the choice of setting your own Default Font in Gmail using a Lab but it’s limited to the few fonts that come with the app but since this has been wanted for so long it is a step in the right direction.
First open Settings > Labs > find Default Text Styling and Enable it then drop to the bottom of the page and save it. Move to the General page in Settings and find Default Text Style and change this to whatever you would like it to be and once again Save.
Once you have started composing you can change back to the standard font by clicking on the T with a little red x for the mail that you are composing or for parts of the text.

Not so much a font that doesn’t exist in Gmail but a way of utilising the variety of fonts that do at your choice without having to reset the font for each mailing.

Changing fonts in an email.
Settings – Labs – Canned Response – Save Changes.
Now go to Compose and set up whatever font you want to use and in the main text area type in a couple of words such as “Type here” and highlight them, click on Canned Response – New Canned Response – give
it a name – and save. Next time you want to send anything using that font just open the Canned Response and pick it out. This will not change the address or Subject font. This should work in any browser but who knows!

Using a Font that isn’t in Gmail



Open a Word or equivalent program and pick a Font,Size and Colour and press Space Bar and the Enter/Return key a few times to give you space in case of an error. Open a new email copy the Word page to this and save it to a new Canned Response, next time you want to use it click Canned Response and use the choice of the day. Just start typing into the text area. The thing to watch out for is doing a return too many as when you go back it will revert to the default type. The way I do it is to type a few words into the Word page and after saving it go back to the inbox then open a new email and bring up the Canned Response to check it has gone in properly – delete the words and save again (same title) – the next time you can go straight in and start typing.
Please note it is possible that the receiver may not have the identical font and will use the nearest equivalent or if they have a default font set up it will show in this.

Using other languages



There is more than one way to accomplish this but this should work in Windows.
Click Start – Control Panel – Fonts – General and in the left column is Text Services and Input Languages – open this to bring up a small menu and click Add to see which languages are available. Click on the + and then Keyboard and + again to choose the type of keyboard you have and OK. You will now revert to the first menu so move to Language Bar – tick Show Additional Language  ……………………. and Show Text Labels …………………. followed by apply.
To change direction of language, left to right or right to left, hold down Ctlrl, Shift and x at the same time.

If you need an onscreen keyboard it is in either one of these, Accessories – Ease of Access or Control Panel – Ease of Access and is Start Onscreen Keyboard and when you have it on your home screen would be a good point to set up an icon to bring this up at any time.
The language of the on screen keyboard is controlled by tapping on the Initial letters of the language now in your toolbar and not only works in Gmail but any other emailers you may use.
If any users are fluent enough in another language to translate this they are free to use it and publish a new Knol or if they would like to forward the translation to me I will add it to this Knol with a note of thanks.

A little sub note here, when you’re creating the address in Word or whatever when it is copied to your Canned Response it will double space this as each line will be regarded as a paragraph. To get around it you can work back through the address using delete and “Shift Key and Enter” at the same time once it is in the CR.

Dear Reader,
As you can see this is where your imagination can take hold. The choice of which font to use in any given area can be made and as before, all it takes is giving yourself enough space with a combination of enter/returns to combat any possible typing errors made below the  “Dear …………………” and prior to the “Yours sincerely” prior to creating a signature.
Unfortunately it does not seem possible to create a written signature at this point in time using an image but that might be safer as anybody could then copy it and use it for whatever nefarious (love the occasional long word) purposes.
One of the nice things about this is the ability to print a confirmatory copy and use Pony Express to deliver it.
When you get to this point in writing the text it’s time to use the “Delete” key to get rid of any extra space so that the signature area does not look as if it was part of a pre formed item. Give the recipients the courtesy of thinking this was specially written just for them.

Another sub note to show that you can add links as well by copying them from the address bar and pasting in below the signature. When the mail is sent it should show in blue and be clickable.

No longer necessary as there is a lab called “Inserting Images” but just so you can see what we used to have to do to load a picture:-
Transfer your pictures to an online web album (Picasa Web) and then:-
Embedding photo’s
Open two browsers at the same time and shrink them both so they will fit on the screen at the same time. In one use Compose and open an email ready to send, in the second it’s a Web album with the picture
wanted to send picked. Click into the centre of the picture wanted and holding down the left button of the mouse drag it into the main text box of the email. The image can be shrunk to fit the space you want to fit it into but I would suggest putting the text in first as this is difficult to do afterwards. As soon as you shrink the image a crossed arrow will appear top left of the image and will allow it to be moved but there is no guarantee the receivers emailer will get it in the same form. The way I have used is to press the enter key a few times to create a space – resize and drag it into place.

Word of warning, the picture in the email will only last as long as it is in the web album unless it is transferred to a folder in the receiver’s hard drive.
Upload time for your email will be seconds instead of minutes and so will the download time at the other end. If you want to add text I would suggest doing it before you drag the photo’s in and you can drag as many as you like. This way is virtually unlimited. You could always send the photo’s in one email which you follow imediately with instructions telling the receiver how to copy them to their own pc which is: open a new folder in “My Photos” on their pc and drag the photos into this.
Special notes for Internet Explorer users: The crossed arrow does not show up so you have to pull one corner and push the opposite to place the image and use Small, Medium, Original and Large to rescale it to the correct proportions.
